The purpose of the Power2Ammonia project is to research the potentials for economically sustainable production of ammonia on micro-plants placed locally at agriculture farms that have access to renewable energy sources such as windmills for running the ammonia plant.

More than 180 million tons of ammonia is produced yearly on a global scale. The production of ammonia for commercial fertilizer and chemicals takes place at approximately 150 giant and centralized factories around the globe. The traditional ammonia production methods of today demands high pressure and heat, along with a large amount of fossil energy. As a result, traditionally produced ammonia emits up to 8 kg of CO2 per produced kg of ammonia.

By utilizing the potential of available renewable energy sources, such as windmills and solar cells, placed at decentralized locations such as farms, the Power2Ammonia project will test the case for producing green ammonia and simultaneously achieve a good business case for farmers’ investments in fertilizer products based on ammonia. Decentralized production of green ammonia would eliminate a significant amount of the steps in the value-chain of the traditionally produced ammonia. By eliminating some of these steps, green ammonia has potential to be a favorable option for farmers, purchasing ammonia-based fertilizer products.  

In the project, Hydrogen Valley, Aalborg University and Green Hydrogen Systems will conceptualize how small-scale and local ammonia plants can be developed for decentralized placement.

The project has received funding from the Future Food & Bioresource Innovation. The project runs from October 2020 to May 2021.
